Hyperprolactinemia And Erectile Dysfunction Hormonal And Oral Therapy

The presence of more than the normal levels of prolactin in blood is called Hyperprolactinemia. The normal levels in females are less than 580 mlU/L for women and less than 450 mlU/L for men. The increased prolactin level in blood is caused by the small benign tumors in pituitary part of the brain affecting ovulation and breast milk production. The hormone is down regulated by dopamine and is up regulated by estrogen.

Hyperprolactinemia results in decreased levels of testosterone in the blood resulting reduced erection causing erectile dysfunction in men.
